Frequently asked questions

Can you use water based lube with silicone sex toys?

Yes. Water based lube is specifically the correct lube type for silicone sex toys. Silicone lubricant can bond with and degrade the surface of silicone toys over time, causing the material to become sticky, discoloured, or porous. Water based lube has no chemical interaction with silicone and is completely safe for use with silicone vibrators, dildos, butt plugs, and any other silicone toy. It is also safe with glass, stainless steel, ABS plastic, TPE, and every other common sex toy material, making it the universally compatible option for toy use.

Does water based lube work with condoms?

Yes. Water based lube is safe with all condom types including latex, polyisoprene, and polyurethane. Oil based lubes are not safe with latex or polyisoprene condoms because they break down the material and cause the condom to fail. Silicone lube is technically safe with latex condoms but is not necessary to use alongside them. Water based lube is the standard recommendation for use with condoms and is the type sold alongside condoms in most pharmacies for this reason. Apply lube to the outside of the condom during use to reduce friction and increase comfort for both partners.

Why does water based lube dry out during sex and what do I do?

Water based lube dries out faster than silicone lube because the water content evaporates from the skin surface during use, especially during longer sessions. When a water based lube starts to feel tacky or sticky, it has lost moisture rather than stopped working. You can reactivate it by adding a few drops of water or saliva, which restores the slippery texture without requiring a full reapplication. Alternatively, choosing a thicker gel formula reduces evaporation compared to a thin liquid, and buying a larger bottle makes it easy to reapply freely without rationing.

What is the difference between a standard water based lube and a thick gel water based lube?

Standard water based lubes have a thin to medium consistency that spreads easily and feels light on the skin. They are well suited to vaginal sex, masturbation, and most toy use where natural-feeling glide is the goal. Thick gel water based lubes have a higher viscosity that stays in place rather than running off, provides more cushioning between tissues, and lasts longer before needing reapplication. Thick gels are the preferred choice for anal play because the anus produces no natural lubrication and requires a larger volume of lube that stays in position. Some people also prefer thick gel for toy use because it coats the toy surface more evenly and does not need to be reapplied as frequently.

Is water based lube safe for vaginal use, and are there formulas better suited for people with sensitivity?

Water based lube is safe for vaginal use and is the most commonly used lubricant type for this purpose. Standard formulas work well for most people. However, some formulas contain glycerin, parabens, or other preservatives that cause irritation in a proportion of users, particularly with frequent or regular vaginal application. Glycerin can encourage yeast overgrowth in susceptible people. For anyone with a history of vaginal sensitivity, irritation, or yeast infections, the better option is a glycerin-free and paraben-free formula, such as JO Agape, Sliquid Organics Natural, or YES Organic Water Based. pH-balanced formulas that use citric acid to match the vaginal environment are also available and are a good choice for daily or frequent use.
