Frequently asked questions

Can I use silicone lubricant with a silicone sex toy?

No. Silicone-based lubricants should not be used with silicone sex toys. The lubricant can react with the toy's silicone surface, causing it to swell, become sticky, or develop permanent pitting that degrades the toy's texture and creates a surface that harbours bacteria. Always use a water-based or hybrid lubricant with silicone toys. If you are unsure what material your toy is made from, default to water-based lubricant, which is safe with all toy materials. The silicone-on-silicone incompatibility is one of the most common causes of sex toy damage and is entirely avoidable by checking the toy material before choosing a lubricant.

What is the difference between water-based, silicone, and hybrid lubricants?

Water-based lubricants use purified water as their primary ingredient and are compatible with all toy materials and all condom types. They absorb into skin over time and require reapplication during longer sessions. Silicone-based lubricants use silicone as their base, which does not absorb into skin or evaporate. They last significantly longer without reapplication and are completely waterproof, making them well suited for shower or bath use. They must not be used with silicone toys. Hybrid lubricants start with a water base and add a small percentage of silicone (typically 10 to 20%) to extend longevity compared with a pure water-based formula, while remaining generally safe for use with silicone toys. Most people find hybrid lubricants a practical everyday choice.

Are flavoured lubricants safe to use vaginally?

Most flavoured lubricants are formulated for oral use rather than vaginal use and many contain sweeteners such as sugar, glucose, or glycerin that can disrupt the vaginal pH and contribute to yeast infections or bacterial vaginosis when used internally in the vagina. If you want to use a flavoured lubricant vaginally as well as for oral play, look specifically for a glycerin-free formulation such as the Sliquid Swirl range, which is flavoured without glycerin and has a lower risk of disrupting vaginal health. Flavoured lubricants are safe for use on the penis, vulva externally, and for oral sex in general.

Do I need a specific lubricant for anal sex or can I use any lube?

The rectum does not produce its own lubrication and its tissue is thinner and more sensitive than vaginal tissue, so using a purpose-formulated anal lubricant makes a meaningful difference to comfort and safety compared with using a standard thin water-based lube. Anal-specific lubricants such as Sliquid Sassy or Body Action Anal Glide are formulated with a thicker gel consistency that stays in place during penetration rather than dispersing immediately. This provides more sustained lubrication throughout the session. A standard thin water-based lube can be used for anal play in an emergency but requires much more frequent reapplication to maintain sufficient lubrication.

How do delay sprays work and are they safe to use?

Delay sprays and creams contain a topical anaesthetic, typically lidocaine or benzocaine, which temporarily reduces nerve sensitivity in the glans of the penis when applied before sex. This slows the accumulation of stimulation required to trigger ejaculation, which extends the duration of penetrative sex. They are safe when used at the recommended dose; using too much of the product reduces sensitivity to the point where erection or arousal may be affected. Many delay sprays require the penis to be wiped or washed before penetration to prevent the numbing agent from transferring to the partner, which would reduce their sensation. Check the specific product instructions for application timing, recommended amount, and whether washing before penetration is advised.
